2025 Dodge Hornet
2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale

Safety

The Hornet has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Tonale doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Hornet and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Hornet 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 19 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Hornet’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Hornet’s reliability 12 points higher than the Tonale.

Engine

The Hornet R/T’s standard 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 3 more horsepower (288 vs. 285) and 36 lbs.-ft. more torque (383 vs. 347) than the Tonale’s 1.3 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Hornet R/T is faster than the Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV:

Tires and Wheels

The Hornet has a standard space-saver spare (not available on R/T) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Tonale; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Hornet R/T handles at .87 G’s, while the Tonale Veloce pulls only .86 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the Hornet R/T has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (6.1 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Hornet to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Hornet GT’s minimum ground clearance is 2.4 inches higher than on the Tonale (8 vs. 5.6 inches).

Recommendations

The Dodge Hornet outsold the Alfa Romeo Tonale by over four to one during 2023.
